Guest blog: CRB checks for contractors

The world of criminal record checks can be a complicated business. There are three levels of checks; Basic, Standard and Enhanced Disclosures, all varying in how much criminal information they display. For most contractors, it is likely they will have been asked to get criminal record checks by a customer at some point, usually for a contract in a school, care home, hospital or nursery. Even though they are not working with vulnerable people on those sites, they will almost always require some sort of criminal record disclosure before being allowed to enter these sites.

Problems arise when it comes to the turnaround time on criminal record checks. The vast majority of the time, contractors are only able to obtain the Basic Disclosure (due to the nature of the work they are doing), which usually takes around 10 – 14 days to complete. Unfortunately, customers will often request criminal record checks, just a matter of days before the contract is due to start, leaving the contractor between the proverbial rock and a hard place!
